Now, as in Bible times, a form of community support is gleaning. In Bible times narrow pathways would separate the fields of the different farmers or families. The Jews were forbidden from harvesting the corners of their fields. Why? As a form of social support for the poor, the widows, the orphans, disabled and foreigners traveling through the land, had the right to glean. We joined a group called Fraser Valley Gleaners that helps gather food from the Lower Mainland growers. They take and prepare blemished vegetables to make a soup packages that will feed 100 people in third world countries. Fraser Valley Gleaners believes that we have been blessed with so much that it is our responsiblity to give something back to those in need. Fraser Valley Gleaners provided us with a tangible display of community building, servant working, justice seeking and creation keeping.
