2B at A Rocha

What does the name ‘A Rocha’ mean?

A Rocha is a Portuguese name which means ‘the rock’. The first ever A Rocha project started in Portugal in 1983. The project was set up to look after an area of land near the sea which was important for birds and other kinds of wildlife. The name A Rocha was kept when projects started in other countries around the world. A name which means ‘the rock’ is a good one for A Rocha to use because A Rocha is a Christian group, and the Bible talks about God being the rock on which Christians base their lives. A Rocha wants Jesus to be the rock on which its work is based. It is also a good name because A Rocha does scientific work, studying plants and animals, and a name meaning ‘the rock’ shows that A Rocha is based on good science.

What does A Rocha believe?

A Rocha is made up of Christians who have belief in the bible: they believe that the world was made by God and the world was made for God. God has given people the job of looking after the world. A Rocha works with people of all faiths and of no faith to help care for the world in practical ways.

What does A Rocha do?

A Rocha helps people, groups, churches and communities think about how they treat the world, and help them to care for people and the planet, in their local area and around the world. The first A Rocha project was in Portugal, and now there are projects all round the world, from Peru to India, South Africa to Finland.
