Vancouver Fire Department (VFD) Visits 2B

Firefighter Brian from the VFD came to visit 2B at SCS.  Firefighters are important community workers.
Firefighter Brian has his boots and pants ready in the 'GO' position in Firehall #14.  His boots are placed right by a Vancouver City map, his jacket is already in the fire truck.  The goal of a Vancouver firefighter is to be at the fire within 5 minutes of being called.
 A firefighter's gear weighs about 80lbs. or 37kg.

Firefighters will check that the buddy they are working with has their skin covered with protective gear.
Firefighter Brian is totally equipped to fight a fire.  Here are some tips we learned from Firefighter Brian.

1.  Firemen want to save you.  Your house, toys and clothes can be replaced, YOU can't!!
2.  Have a fire escape plan that you and your family practice.
3.  Have a smoke detector on EVERY floor of your home.  When you go to sleep, so does your nose!!!  The smoke detector acts like your nose when you are sleeping.
4. EVERY month, check to see if your smoke detector works.
5.  Replace the batteries in your smoke detector two times a year.  Fireman Brian suggested doing this when you change your clocks (Fall and Spring).
6. If you smell smoke, crawl on your knees to get out of the house.  If a door is closed, ALWAYS feel if the door is hot.  Touch the door with the soft, sensitive skin on  top of your hand.  If the door is hot, have a second escape route.  Climb out of your window and wait for the firemen to arrive.
7.  If your clothing catches on fire.....STOP!DROP!ROLL!
8.  Never play with matches or a lighter.  It could save your LIFE!!!!

Thanks Firefighter Brian for sharing your job in the community with us.
